IRGC Unveils New Underground ‘Missile City’

TEHRAN—The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Saturday unveiled a new underground base housing cruise missiles designed to target destroyers in strategic southern waters in the event of a confrontation.
IRGC Chief Commander Major General Hussein Salami visited the “missile city” on Iran’s southern shores where he inspected the combat readiness of the IRGC Navy’s missile units at the new facility.
The upgraded missiles stationed in the base are also equipped to counter electronic warfare and can be operational in the shortest time possible.
This is the third underground missile base unveiled by the IRGC in less than a month.
On January 18, the IRGC Navy showcased an underground naval missile base in an undisclosed location in the Persian Gulf. Earlier on January 10, the IRGC’s Aerospace Force unveiled another underground missile city.
Iran says its ballistic missiles are an important deterrent against the enemies.
Last month, Iran’s armed forces launched massive military exercises across the country during which the IRGC drilled how to defend nuclear installations.
IRGC spokesman Ali Muhammad Naini said then that the number of drills has almost doubled this year compared to last year, in response to the evolving threat landscape.
“These exercises are significantly larger in scope and sophistication, featuring new weaponry and expanded participation of brigades engaged in realistic operations,” he said.
Earlier Saturday, Iran’s Air Force chief Brigadier General Hamid Vahedi said his forces have equipped combat planes and drones with state-of-the-art systems.
During a visit to an air base in Iran’s eastern city of Birjand, General Vahedi said the Air Force will soon unveil two new achievements about which provided no more information.
The commander said Iran’s armed forces are fully prepared to counter any threat at any level.
Last December, the Air Force said the pilotless version of its homegrown stealth fighter jet Qaher (Conqueror) had shown promising performance in flight tests.
The Qaher-313, unveiled in February 2013, is a single-seat stealth fighter jet that can take off and land on short runways.
