Iran Seeks to Become Nuclear Power Hub
TEHRAN - The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Muhammad Eslami says the country pursues the “open door policy” and seeks to become a hub for designing and building nuclear power plants.
“We seek to create an open atmosphere and will pursue the open door policy. Fortunately, the preparations for the implementation of this policy have been made,” Eslami said, addressing a conference on the exchange of modern energy technologies.
He added that pursuing the open door policy as well as new innovations is high on the agenda of the Iranian government, which has prepared a number of strategic documents over the past year to achieve its objectives in this regard.
“We intend to provide various services in the field of nuclear technology, including the development of nuclear power plants and nuclear power generation,” the nuclear chief said, adding that the country plans to convert 20 percent of its energy portfolio into nuclear power.
Pointing to Iran’s plans to construct nuclear power plants and generate 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power, Eslami said, “Given the very good capability and potential in this field, we plan to turn the country into a hub for designing and building nuclear power plants.”
In recent years, Iranian scientists have made remarkable progress in the field of peaceful nuclear technology despite the tough sanctions imposed by the West.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said in February that enemies are seeking to deprive Iranians of peaceful nuclear energy, stressing once again that the Islamic Republic has never sought nuclear weapons.
Speaking on the occasion of the National Nuclear Technology Day in April, Eslami said the AEOI unveiled and inaugurated nearly 77 new achievements in the nuclear technology sector during the Persian calendar year of 1400, which started on March 21, 2021 and ended on March 20, 2022.
Among them, 29 achievements were related to nuclear fuel, while 19 others were in the field of nuclear research and development. A total of 15 achievements were made in the field of energy supply and another 14 achievements in the sphere of radiation application, the AEOI chief said.
