TEHRAN -- Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran attaches great importance to expansion of relations with Latin American countries, particularly Nicaragua.
In a phone conversation, Amir-Abdollahian and Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister Denis Moncada discussed possible ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in different fields.
The Iranian diplomat invited his Nicaraguan counterpart to pay a visit to Tehran.
“Fortunately, political relations between the two countries are in a good status and I hope that we will be able to further expand economic cooperation in the near future,” he said.
He offered congratulations over the victory of Daniel Ortega and his Sandinista alliance in the November presidential election in Nicaragua and said Iran is ready to further expand mutual relations with Managua.
Amir-Abdollahian said the participation of Iranian Vice President for Economic Affairs Mohsen Rezaei in Ortega’s swearing-in ceremony showed attaches great significance to the deepening of ties with Nicaragua and other Latin American states.
Ortega overwhelmingly won the November 7 presidential election, clinching a fourth consecutive term. He has been sworn in as the Nicaraguan President on January 11, only hours after the U.S. and European Union imposed fresh sanctions on several figures in his government.
The Nicaraguan foreign minister, for his part, said the two countries have reached agreements in various economic, medical, scientific, technological and industrial sectors, adding that Managua is ready to implement these accords with Tehran as soon as possible.
