Iraq Continues Operation to Hunt Down Daesh
BAGHDAD (Dispatches) –Iraqi forces continued an operation to hunt down Deash terrorists in several areas across the country.
A statement by the army said that its troops managed to dismantle a terrorist network after capturing three terrorists that have links with remnants of Daesh in the city of Heet, some 160 km west of Baghdad.
The latest arrest brought the number of terrorists captured since the launch of the operation on Friday morning to 10, the statement added.
The operation came one day after two bombings took place on Thursday morning in a bustling outdoor market in the Bab al-Sharji area in downtown Baghdad, which resulted in the killing of 32 people and the wounding of more than a hundred others.
The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the Thursday suicide attacks in a crowded marketplace - the deadliest in nearly three years.
The first attacker drew a crowd at the bustling market in Tayaran Square by claiming to feel sick, and then detonated his explosives belt. As more people then flocked to the scene to help the victims, a second bomber set off his explosives.
Later on Saturday, at least 11 fighters from Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), better known as Hashd al-Sha’abi, were martyred in an ambush by Daesh terrorists north of the Iraqi capital.
The terrorists used light weapons and the cover of darkness to target the PMU fighters east of Tikrit, the capital of Iraq’s Saladin province.
In another development, a fresh explosion on Sunday hit an area in western Baghdad.
A security source, who spoke to Al-Sumaria news on condition of anonymity, said the blast struck an area near a store in al-Adl neighborhood.
No one was killed in this explosion, according to the security source. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the fresh explosion so far.
