Iranian Greco-Roman Wrestlers Shine at World Championships
TEHRAN – Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers have claimed colorful medals at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships on Saturday in Oslo, Norway.
Ali Akbar Yousefi defeated Russian wrestler Zurabi Gedekhauri 5-1 in the final bout of the 130kg won a gold medal.
Yousefi is the first Iranian heavyweight wrestler to win a gold medal in this weight category in world competitions.
Muhammad Hadi Saravi had also won Iran’s first gold in the competition by beating his Hungarian rival Alex Szoke 3-1 in the 97kg.
Mohammad Ali Geraei in 77kg and Pejman Poshtam in 82kg had also won two bronze medals.
A total of 800 wrestlers from 100 countries are competing at the Wrestling World Championships, being held from October 2 to 10 in Oslo, Norway.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sat. congratulated Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers on winning gold medal in World’s Wrestling Championship which is underway in Norwegian capital Oslo.
In a tweet on Saturday, Iranian Parliament speaker Muhammad Bagher Qalibaf, said, “I congratulate the winning of gold medal by Muhammad Hadi Saravi and also history making of heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestler Ali Akbar Yousefi in World Wrestling Championship to the noble nation of Islamic Iran, their coaches and people of Amol and Babol cities in Mazandaran province.”
The Iranian freestyle wrestling team finished the world championships earlier this week in third place after Russia and United States.
The 2021 World Wrestling Championships is the 17th edition of the World Wrestling Championships of combined events and is held from 2 to 10 October 2021 in Oslo, Norway.
