WASHINGTON (Dispatches) - Nearly 4,000 fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts have tested positive for COVID-19, according to state health officials. As of June 12 there had been 3,791 cases among more than 3.7mln fully vaccinated people in the state, data from the Department of Public Health shows. That means that around one in 1,000 fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts are still becoming infected despite getting their shots.

LONDON (Dispatches) - Dozens of people have reportedly been killed or injured after Ethiopia’s air force bombed a market in the northern region of Tigray. Eyewitnesses said the Ethiopian air force struck the town of Togoga on Tuesday, 25 km (15 miles) from the region’s capital, Mekelle. The Ethiopian military denied targeting civilians, saying it carried out the strikes to neutralise “terrorists”. Tigrayan rebel forces are said to have made advances in recent days. However, this has been denied by the Ethiopian government. Thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced after conflict erupted almost eight months ago.

LONDON (Dispatches) - British nationals living in the European Union are having difficulty accessing benefits, services and jobs, Home Secretary Priti Patel said Wednesday, speaking on the fifth anniversary of the Brexit vote. For EU citizens living in Britain, immigration officials have announced a 28-day period to apply for the right to remain. In an article in The Daily Telegraph, Home Secretary Priti Patel accused EU countries of treating British people unfairly, five years after more than 51 percent of Britons voted to leave the bloc following a campaign led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

LONDON (Bloomberg) - Egyptian officials and owners of the giant Ever Given vessel that blocked the Suez Canal earlier this year have reached a preliminary deal over compensation, according to the ship’s representatives. “Following extensive discussions with the Suez Canal Authority’s negotiating committee over the past few weeks, an agreement in principle between the parties has been reached,” Stann Marine Ltd., a London-based law firm for the Ever Given’s owners and insurers, said in an emailed statement.

PARIS (France24) - An Ivory Coast court on Wednesday sentenced former prime minister and rebel leader Guillaume Soro to life imprisonment in absentia on charges of plotting a coup against President Alassane Ouattara. Soro, who is in exile in Europe, was charged with conspiracy and an attempted attack on state authority. His lawyers have previously condemned the charges as politically motivated and said there was no evidence to show he was guilty.
