Iran Self-Sufficient in Building Military Equipment
TEHRAN (Dispatches) -- Iran’s top military commander says the Islamic Republic has attained self-sufficiency in manufacturing military equipment and systems needed to defend its sovereignty.
"Today we can announce that we have achieved self-sufficiency in defending the country,” Major General Muhammad Baqeri, the chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, said on Thursday during an exhibition of military products in Tehran.
He added that these achievements have brought about "effective might and deterrence, and sustainable security and defense” for the Iranian nation.
The top military commander further hailed the great and "eye-catching” progress the country has made in the field of military industries in the past two years, noting that Iran is becoming less dependent on foreigners in producing defense-related hardware thanks to its universities as well as knowledge-based companies, which are actively designing and manufacturing military equipment.
Today, a major proportion of the country’s defense needs are supplied by the defense industry, General Baqeri stressed.
Iran has taken great strides seeking to attain self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems in the face of decades-long sanctions and arms embargoes on the country.
The country consequently produces a wide variety of advanced weapons systems and equipment based on its own technological capabilities.
Iran Navy’s commander said last Thursday that the force will soon be flying sophisticated unmanned aerial vehicles from its warships, saying the new gear will be even more versatile than the Navy’s current lineup of drones in terms of range and other technologies.
"Today, the Navy’s warships are equipped with drones that have a range of 200 to 1,000 kilometers, but all the flight and intelligence limits will fade away once the new drones arrive,” Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi told a gathering of Navy personnel and their families.
On November 30, Iran’s Navy also announced the mass production of the indigenously-designed and submarine-launched "Jask” cruise missile along with unveiling a handful of other military projects and technological achievements.
Navy chief Rear Admiral Hussein Khanzadi announced the mass production of the Jask missile while visiting a Navy exhibition showcasing a number of the force’s recent achievements on Saturday.
Khanzadi said all of the force’s submarines will be equipped with the weapon and that the missile’s current range will be improved "substantially” in the future.
The missile "will surely be a serious surprise for the enemy,” he said.
