President Rouhani: Future Is Very Bright
TEHRAN (Dispatches) -- President Hassan Rouhani on Monday reiterated Iran’s resolve to resist economic pressures, saying he is confident the Iranian people will successfully weather the current difficult situation caused by U.S. sanctions.
Iran’s strategy with regard to the 2015 nuclear agreement has changed from "strategic patience” to reciprocation, the president said, referring to Tehran’s decision to scale back its commitments after the other signatories’ failure to protect the country from the unilateral U.S. sanctions.
"If the other parties return and meet their obligations, Iran will return as well; if they fail to meet their obligations, so will Iran and if they fully implement the deal, Iran will do the same,” Rouhani said.
"Our path is the right path,” Rouhani said, adding the Iranian people have concluded that they should not exercise more patience in the face of bullies.
"With the new situation, we will definitely emerge victorious and our enemies will fail,” the president said, adding "the future is very bright.”
Despite calling for talks with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that U.S. sanctions on Iran would soon be increased "substantially”.
Existing U.S. sanctions have targeted Iran’s main foreign revenue stream from crude oil exports, which Trump in May moved to try to eliminate entirely.
In reaction, Tehran said it would scale back its commitments under the deal, under which it had agreed to curb its nuclear program in return for relief from U.S. and other economic sanctions.
Rouhani said on Sunday the Iranian nation has successfully withstood against U.S. sanctions, adding the country will resist more firmly if it comes under more pressure.
"If the enemies seek to keep up their pressure and make us surrender us, we will stand against the pressure,” he said.
In an address to a large group of people in the North Khorasan province, Rouhani said some people in the White House falsely claim that Iran’s economy is on the verge of collapse under the U.S. sanctions.
"It is a lie that the Iranian nation has deviated from the path of progress due to the U.S. sanctions,” he said.
"For 14 months, the biggest economic and military power in the world has imposed the toughest sanctions on the people of Iran … But the resistant people of Iran have stood firm in these 14 months, and every route the Americans have taken has led to defeat,” he said.
