Syria, Iran Tackle Hurdles to Execution of Agreements
DAMASCUS (Dispatches) -- An Iranian parliamentary delegation visiting Syria on Wednesday called for accelerated efforts to carry out trade and economic agreements signed between the two countries before.
The delegation, led by chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, met with Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis here Wednesday.
The Iranian lawmaker said although Iran and Syria have signed a series of agreements to broaden economic cooperation, they have not properly seized upon their trade opportunities.
Falahatpisheh also called on the Syrian government to facilitate the entry of Iranian vessels to the port city of Tartus and the removal of obstacles on the implementation of bilateral agreements on oil production and agricultural cooperation.
For his part, the Syrian prime minister pledged to resolve problems originating in his country as he called on Iran to do the same.
Iran and Syria signed a deal for military cooperation in a meeting between the defense ministers of the two countries in Damascus in August.
Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami traveled to Damascus for a two-day visit, meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and senior military officials.
Iranian forces have backed Assad in the country’s war against foreign-backed terrorists.
Senior Iranian officials have said their military presence in Syria is at the invitation of the Assad government and they have no immediate plans to withdraw.
The Islamic Republic has also pledged to play a crucial role Syria’s reconstruction, which Damascus has welcomed.
