Yemen Strikes at Saudi Heartland After Massacre of 33 Civilians
SANA’A -- Yemen's armed forces said on Sunday they carried out four military operations using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones against targets in Saudi Arabia and against Saudi-affiliated forces inside Yemen, in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes that killed dozens of civilians, including women and children, in residential areas near Sanaa.
Military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement carried by the Al-Masirah television that the first operation targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Aramco oil storage tanks and the capital's financial center, citing direct and precise hits that caused extensive damage.
The second operation struck Aramco facilities in the Buqayq area in a direct hit that caused fires at the targeted sites.
The third operation targeted a gathering of Saudi-affiliated forces under the command of a Saudi officer named Fares al-Shamri in eastern al-Jawf province and the Medghal district of Marib province, causing numerous casualties, according to the statement.
The fourth operation hit positions of Saudi-affiliated forces under the command of an officer named Badr al-Harbi in the al-Mudaraba area of Lahj province, also causing heavy losses.
Saree said the operations were in response to Saudi aggression against Yemen and the killing of civilians, and that Yemen's military would continue operations against Saudi depth until the kingdom is punished for the "martyrdom of Yemeni citizens" and deterred from further attacks.
He emphasized the continued strategy of "siege for siege and escalation for escalation," and said attacks on Saudi-affiliated troop gatherings and commanders would continue until the strikes stop and the siege of Yemen ends.
The statement followed an announcement by Yemen's health ministry on Saturday that Saudi airstrikes on the al-Shariya area of Sana’a province killed 33 Yemeni citizens, most of them women and children, and wounded 39 others.
According to near-final figures, the dead included 12 men, eight women and 13 children, while the injured included 16 men, 10 women and 13 children. Two cameramen from Al-Masirah television were among the wounded.
Saree said Saudi forces had carried out 105 airstrikes and missile attacks on Sanaa and seven other Yemeni provinces over a 24-hour period. Ground clashes between Yemeni forces and Saudi-affiliated forces also continued on several axes inside Yemen, particularly in Ta’izz.
The targeting of residential areas and industrial facilities in Yemen has raised concerns beyond civilian casualties, with fears of damage to infrastructure and economic consequences from the disruption or halt of production centers.
