Qeshm, Aras and Tabas Geoparks Await UNESCO Revalidation

TEHRAN -- Iran’s three UNESCO Global Geoparks – Qeshm, Aras and Tabas – are expected to undergo their periodic international revalidation assessments in 2027, following the postponement of evaluation missions originally scheduled for 2026.
The assessments were postponed because of regional circumstances and the inability to secure travel authorizations for international evaluators.
According to Alireza Amrikazemi, vice-chair of the National Committee for Earth Sciences and Geoparks of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and Head of the Iranian Geoparks Network, the country hopes that assessment teams will be able to visit the sites next year, provided conditions improve.
The three geoparks represent important examples of Iran’s geological diversity and provide opportunities to connect geoconservation with scientific research, environmental education and sustainable tourism.
Qeshm UNESCO Global Geopark, located in the Persian Gulf, is internationally recognized for its remarkable geological formations, coastal landscapes, salt caves and distinctive landforms. Its geological heritage is closely connected with the island’s cultural traditions and local livelihoods.
Aras UNESCO Global Geopark, in northwestern Iran, showcases the geological complexity of the northwestern Iranian plateau, including impressive rock formations, mountain landscapes and evidence of a long geological history. Its location also provides opportunities to explore the connections between geological and cultural heritage.
Tabas UNESCO Global Geopark, in eastern Iran, is distinguished by its extensive geological record, dramatic desert landscapes and internationally significant geological formations. Its natural heritage offers considerable potential for geotourism, education and scientific investigation.
The UNESCO revalidation process is an important mechanism for ensuring that geoparks maintain international standards in geological conservation, management, education and sustainable development. It also provides an opportunity to identify achievements, address management challenges and strengthen cooperation with local communities.
Although the postponement has delayed the assessment process, Iran’s three geoparks remain important components of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
