Al-Khalifa Regime Deploys Troops as Bahrainis Mark ‘Day of Popular Action’

MANAMA (Dispatches) -- Bahraini security forces are on high alert across the kingdom on Saturday as opposition groups stage a “Day of Popular Anger” to coincide with the trial of dozens of Shia clerics, escalating a standoff that rights organizations say has pushed the country into its worst repression in years.
The February 14 Revolutionary Youth Coalition called for nationwide participation in Saturday’s demonstrations, demanding the release of detained religious figures and political prisoners.
Several opposition groups, including the dissolved Al-Wefaq society, Al-Wafa, Ahrar Bahrain, Haq and Amal, issued a joint statement describing the proceedings against the clerics as unlawful and intended to restrict religious freedom.
Bahraini Shia religious scholars separately declared November 8 a “decisive day” and urged followers to express rejection of what they called the targeting of the Jaafari school and its clerics through peaceful means.
Authorities have tightened deployments along the Budaiya Highway and other sensitive areas, and reportedly urged media outlets to characterize the planned protests as inflammatory and unlawful.
The trial involves more than 50 clerics and religious scholars facing prosecution, with opposition figures saying the charges lack credible evidence and amount to a political campaign against Bahrain’s Shia religious establishment. The proceedings follow a mass arrest campaign of Shia clerics in May 2026, which rights groups documented as arbitrary and sectarian in nature.
The United Nations Human Rights Committee, which concluded its 146th session on Friday, received submissions detailing Bahrain’s rapid erosion of civil and political rights, including the mass citizenship stripping of at least 69 persons and restrictions on peaceful assembly.
CIVICUS placed Bahrain on its Watchlist in July 2026, citing authorities’ exploitation of the U.S.-Israeli terrorist war on Iran to launch systematic arrests targeting human rights defenders, political leaders, religious figures and online activists.
Saturday’s events will be closely watched as a test of whether the government’s securitized approach will trigger wider unrest or consolidate its control. With the parliamentary election already postponed to 2027 and Al-Wefaq boycotting the process, the room for political dialogue appears to be narrowing further.
