Envoy to UN: No State Can Rewrite NPT

UNITED NATIONS -- Iran’s envoy to the United Nations defended Tehran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy, saying the U.S. and Israel waged two wars of aggression against Iranian nuclear facilities and warned that no single state can unilaterally rewrite the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Ambassador Gholamhussein Darzi, addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, said Article IV of the NPT guarantees all state parties the right to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination.
He pushed back against systematic efforts by some states to pressure countries into abandoning their national nuclear fuel cycles, including uranium enrichment.
“The United States seeks to deny Iran that right while claiming to uphold the Treaty,” Darzi said. “No State can unilaterally rewrite the Treaty or impose its own political veto.”
Darzi said Washington and Israel launched two separate wars against Iran in 2025 and 2026, targeting peaceful nuclear facilities that were under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
He said the attacks caused widespread destruction and the loss of thousands of lives, including “our martyred leader,” whose fatwa rejected nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, referring to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The envoy condemned the silence of the international community, noting that neither the IAEA General Conference, the Board of Governors, nor the UN Security Council have formally condemned the strikes on safeguarded facilities.
He said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi again failed to condemn the attacks in remarks delivered under the same agenda item on Friday.
