Envoy to UN: U.S. Naval Blockade Is ‘Ongoing Aggression’

NEW YORK (Dispatches) -- Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has called the U.S. naval blockade of Iran an ongoing act of aggression and a flagrant violation of international law, urging the Security Council to condemn it and demand an immediate end to U.S. military aggression.
In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Security Council President Aglaia Balta, Darzi said the blockade, imposed alongside U.S. military aggression that began on February 28, 2026, constitutes a clear breach of the prohibition on the use of force and of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He called on the Security Council to “categorically reject and strongly condemn” the continued U.S. crimes, and to demand that Washington immediately cease its military aggression, lift the naval blockade, and comply with its obligations under the UN Charter.
The letter stated that under Article 3(c) of the UN General Assembly’s Definition of Aggression, “the blockade of the ports or coasts of a State by the armed forces of another State” qualifies as an act of aggression, giving rise to Iran’s inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter.
Darzi further warned that the blockade, combined with sweeping U.S. sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation and other economic sectors, amounts to collective punishment prohibited under international humanitarian law. He said the measures impede access to food, medicines, fuel and agricultural inputs, threatening civilian life.
The letter also called on all UN member states to refrain from recognizing, supporting, facilitating or implementing unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States that violate international law.
