Gaza Buries 75 Recovered From Rubble as Israeli Strikes Kill More

GAZA STRIP (Dispatches) --
|Hundreds of Palestinians marched in a funeral procession in Gaza City for 75 people whose remains were recovered from the rubble of homes destroyed by Israeli forces in the Al-Daraj neighborhood during the early months of the war.
The procession began outside the Daraj Sports Club before the remains were buried at the Sheik Radwan Cemetery, according to Abdullah al-Majdalawi, media director for Gaza’s Civil Defense.
Recovery work remains severely constrained. Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said more than 8,000 Palestinians are still missing and believed to be under the rubble, and that recovering all remaining bodies could take about eight years given the lack of equipment and heavy machinery. A mass funeral for 105 victims was held in Gaza on October 1.
The ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025 included provisions for Israel to allow heavy equipment into Gaza for search and recovery operations. Israel has not honored that commitment, leaving crews to work with limited resources.
Al-Daraj was the site of one of the war’s deadliest incidents. In October 2024, Israel dropped three 2,000-pound bombs on the Tabin school, which was sheltering displaced people in the neighborhood, killing more than 100 Palestinians and wounding dozens.
Al-Jazeera correspondent Hani Mahmoud reported at the time that wounded victims arriving at al-Ahli Hospital were “either soaked in blood or already pronounced dead,” and that many bodies were so disfigured that relatives struggled to identify them.
On Monday, Israeli violations of the ceasefire continued. A Palestinian man was killed and two others wounded when an Israeli drone struck a gathering of civilians near the Al-Israa Mosque in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of western Gaza City, according to WAFA. Medical sources at al-Shifa Hospital confirmed the arrival of one body and several wounded.
A Palestinian was also wounded by Israeli gunfire in the Nahr al-Bared camp area southwest of Khan Younis, while Israeli military vehicles opened heavy fire toward tents sheltering displaced people in the southern and eastern parts of the city.
Israeli naval boats fired machine guns and shells toward Palestinian fishing boats off the coasts of Gaza City and Khan Younis.
Gaza’s health ministry said hospitals had received five bodies over the previous 24 hours, including four newly recorded deaths and one recovered from the rubble, along with 22 injured.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 11, 2025, Israeli violations have killed at least 1,522 Palestinians and injured 5,421, while 839 bodies have been recovered from debris, according to the ministry.
The cumulative death toll since October 7, 2023 stands at 74,480, with 175,539 injured, the ministry said. Some independent estimates put the true figure substantially higher.
