Taliban Suspend BBC FM Broadcasts as EU Envoy Meets Afghan FM

KABUL (Dispatches) -- Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities suspended BBC FM radio broadcasts nationwide on Tuesday, citing what they described as repeated and proven violations, while European and Pakistani officials intensified separate diplomatic and security engagements with Kabul.
The suspension affects a broadcaster whose FM service reaches 5.4 million people, more than 20 percent of Afghanistan’s adult population, primarily in rural areas.
The Taliban said the decision followed documented breaches of Afghan media regulations and what they characterized as persistent malign editorial conduct. BBC programming continues via shortwave, satellite, and online platforms.
Separately, Thomas Frellesen, the European Union’s newly appointed special representative for Afghanistan, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul to discuss security, political, and humanitarian issues.
According to the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Muttaqi complained that the international community has failed to provide necessary assistance to Afghan farmers for alternative livelihoods, warning that without sustained economic support, gains in the drug fight will be difficult to maintain.
Frellesen said the EU supports security and counter-narcotics cooperation and will seek to expand engagement, though Brussels has not formally recognized the Taliban government since 2021.
In Islamabad, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar issued a sharp warning to Kabul, saying Afghanistan would face “consequences” if it fails to act against militants allegedly operating from its territory.
Dar said Pakistan recorded 225 militant attacks in September 2026, the highest monthly figure in 12 years, and accused the Taliban of failing to honor commitments made in earlier talks, including a trilateral meeting with China.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected the accusations, saying Pakistan is “blaming Afghanistan for its own failures.”
Meanwhile, authorities in eastern Afghanistan reported that flash floods triggered by heavy rains struck Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, injuring at least five people and damaging homes, shops, and infrastructure.
The Kabul-Jalalabad highway was closed in the Tangi Abreshom area due to landslides, with technical teams working to reopen the key route connecting the capital to the Torkham border crossing.
