Israel Presses Raids, Strikes Across South Syria and Lebanon

DAMASCUS/BEIRUT (Dispatches) -- Israeli forces pressed their campaign of incursions, airstrikes and intimidation across southern Syria and Lebanon on Sunday, as UN human rights officials sounded alarms over a sharp escalation in violations and Syrian security forces under the authority of Abu Muhammad al-Jolani turned tear gas and live fire on demonstrators in the northeast.
Israeli military patrols crossed into Syrian territory in at least two separate incursions Sunday morning. Three vehicles entered through the Abu al-Ghaythar gate toward Wadi al-Raqqad, advancing along the Ain al-Tina road toward the towns of Jamla and Abidin in the Yarmouk Basin of western Daraa countryside, before taking positions near Wadi Abidin.
A second column of three vehicles moved toward the village of Saida al-Hanout in the Quneitra countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Israeli warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft flew intensively over Deir ez-Zor, the Al-Tanf area and Idlib, while helicopters and warplanes overflew Dara’a and the Yarmouk Basin.
The previous evening, Israeli forces raided Ain Ziwan and Mashirfa in Quneitra, searching homes and establishing a checkpoint before withdrawing after two hours.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said it recorded approximately 280 Israeli military incursions into Syria in September alone — the highest monthly figure this year.
Spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said Israeli forces have kidnapped at least 49 Syrians without any word on their whereabouts, with released detainees describing prolonged detention exceeding a year, transfers between unknown facilities, and allegations of torture including beatings, prolonged forced standing, setting dogs on detainees and threats to harm families.
On Wednesday, a farmer with a disability was shot in the leg and detained while bleeding during an Israeli incursion in Jubbata Al-Khashab, northern Quneitra, before being released an hour and a half later.
On Monday, a 22-year-old man was killed by Israeli forces near Al-Hamidiyah town while walking at night in an unfamiliar area. The High Commissioner called for a prompt and impartial investigation, noting no warning shots were known to have been fired.
Israeli warplanes and artillery continued to pound southern Lebanon on Sunday, striking Kfar Tebnit, Mansouri, Majdalzoun, Tulousa and the outskirts of Braachit.
A massive explosion was detonated inside the town of Haddatha, its sound echoing across the border region. Artillery shelled the area between Mefdoun and Zawtar al-Sharqiya.
In a drone strike Friday near the Lebanon-Syria border at Hawsh al-Sayyed Ali in Hermel district — an area largely spared since the June ceasefire — six people were wounded, including five Syrian nationals, two of them women, and one Lebanese citizen.
Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed 4,386 people and wounded 12,413, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. UN peacekeepers reported Israeli forces fired 455 projectiles into southern Lebanon and violated Lebanese airspace 97 times over a three-day period in August.
In Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province, security forces loyal to the al-Jolani regime fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse hundreds of Kurdish protesters.
Demonstrators demanding security and an end to unrest gathered from across the province; similar protests erupted in Raqqa in solidarity with Hasakah residents.
General Security forces deployed to block protesters from marching toward northern Hasakah, firing tear gas after demonstrators attempted to move forward, according to Al-Mayadeen.
Video circulated on social media showed security forces firing into the air at al-Hamama roundabout, with damage to civilian vehicles from rifle butts. A reinforcement convoy of 10 vehicles filled with armed men arrived before a partial withdrawal.
