TEHRAN - Mahsa Barzegari won the silver medal in the women’s under-30 standard division at the World Poomsae Championships.
The fourth day of the World Poomsae Championships took place in Chuncheon, South Korea on Saturday, with Iranian representatives competing in various standard and freestyle categories.
In the women’s under-30 individual standard division, Mahsa Barzegari advanced to the final after progressing through five rounds.
In the first round, Barzegari scored 8.81 to defeat the Philippines’ Joelene Ninbula, who scored 8.72. In the second round, she scored 8.94 to beat Italy’s Claudia Chiani, who scored 8.80.
The Iranian representative faced Vietnam’s Thi Dang in the third round; both athletes scored 9.050, but Barzegari was ultimately declared the winner.
In the quarterfinals, Barzegari defeated Guatemala’s Alejandro Higueros with a score of 8.990 to 8.840, thereby securing at least a bronze medal by advancing to the semifinals.
Delivering another strong performance in the semifinals, she defeated Thailand’s Rachadawan Tapaent 9.000 to 8.940 to reach the final.
In the final match, Barzegari lost to South Korea’s Jooyoung Lee—scoring 9.110 against Lee’s 9.220—and concluded the tournament with the silver medal. In the Junior Standard Pair division, Iran was represented by Yasna Jalili and Yasin Asadi; they were eliminated after losing their opening match to the Thai team with a score of 8.79 to 8.94.
The Iranian team for the Men’s Under-30 Standard Team division consisted of Yasin Zandi, Amir-Ali Alizadeh, and Alireza Ebrahimi.
In the quarterfinals, the Iranian squad faced the Philippines; they lost the match with a score of 8.900 to 9.000, thereby missing out on a medal.
In the Individual Recognized Poomsae division (Over-17), Yasin Akbari failed to qualify for the final after scoring 8.640 in the preliminary round and was eliminated from the competition.
Iran’s medal tally reached three silver and two bronze medals by the end of the fourth day.
The World Poomsae Championships are taking place in Chuncheon, South Korea, from September 16 to 20, with Iran participating in the event with a squad of 17 athletes.
