TEHRAN -- Iran’s first Global Cultural and Public Diplomacy Award can be seen as the beginning of a new path: one aimed at connecting the country’s cultural capacities with Iranians and people around the world interested in Iranian culture.
The first edition of the award, held in Tehran on Sept. 1 under the slogan “Iran’s Image in the World,” brought together senior government officials, academics, cultural figures and representatives of various institutions. 
The event was organized by the Islamic Culture and Communications Organization and its deputy for Scientific and Cultural Cooperation, following an initiative by organization head Muhammad Mahdi Imanipour.
The presence of senior officials reflected the importance attached to cultural and public diplomacy as an instrument of international engagement. The award was established to recognize individuals and institutions working across culture, arts, heritage, media, academia, religion, sports, translation and other fields to present Iran and its cultural and civilizational capacities to international audiences.
In its first edition, 45 Iranian and foreign figures were recognized, including 15 foreign and 30 Iranian recipients, while the organizers had also planned recognition for other influential figures abroad through Iran’s cultural missions.
The significance of the award, however, lies beyond the ceremony itself. Its stated purpose is to create a continuing network of people who contribute to the 
way Iran is understood abroad — artists whose work reaches international audiences, academics engaged with universities worldwide, athletes competing on international stages, translators carrying Iranian literature into other languages, cultural diplomats building dialogue between societies and Iranians living abroad.
In this sense, cultural diplomacy is not simply a matter of official representation. It is also about dialogue, trust and the ability of societies to communicate their histories, values and contemporary realities.
The organizers have emphasized that the award should develop in future editions through clearer professional criteria, a broader range of recipients and sustained cooperation among previous winners. 
If that process takes shape, the award could evolve from an annual ceremony into an international cultural platform connecting Iran’s cultural resources with audiences and institutions around the world.
The first edition, therefore, is best understood as a first step rather than a finished project: an attempt to identify those who help tell Iran’s story and to create greater space internationally for its culture, art, science, heritage, literature and people.
In a world increasingly shaped by competing narratives, the underlying message is straightforward: countries are understood not only through events, but through the stories told about them. 
For Iran, cultural and public diplomacy offers a means of telling that story through the country’s cultural achievements, historical depth and human connections, while creating opportunities for greater dialogue and mutual understanding.
