U.S. Sanctions Turkish Bank Over Iran-Linked Transactions
TEHRAN – The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced new sanctions on Friday targeting three Turkey-based entities, including Golden Global Investment Bank, over their alleged involvement in facilitating financial transactions for Iran.
Alongside the enforcement action, OFAC issued a new general license allowing for the wind-down of transactions involving select individuals and entities designated on September 4.
The newly sanctioned entities include Istanbul-based Golden Global Investment Bank, located in the Esentepe neighborhood, as well as two affiliated firms based in the Şişli district: Golden Global Portfolio Management Company and Golden Global Asset Leasing Company.
Treasury officials stated the designations were made pursuant to Executive Order 13902, citing the strong structural ties between the investment bank and the portfolio management and asset leasing entities.
According to documents released by the U.S. government, Golden Global Investment Bank and its subsidiaries facilitated “tens of millions of dollars” in transactions for Tehran, including handling funds originating from Chinese purchases of Iranian oil.
“Financial institutions continue to learn the hard way that we are fully committed to economic exclusion,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday. “We hope no further bank sanctions will be necessary, but that ultimately depends on how quickly the international community realizes the necessity of halting support for Iran.”
Treasury officials noted that the sanctions effectively sever Golden Global Investment Bank from key segments of the international financial system. The action marks a notable enforcement step against an institution based in Turkey, a NATO ally.
The move comes as part of a broader sanctions push by the Treasury Department, which has recently targeted financial institutions in the United Arab Emirates accused of serving Iranian clients. The actions reflect an intensified effort by Washington to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
