TEHRAN -- Shahram Sadeghi, a man convicted of deliberately plowing his car into police officers at high speed near Golzar intersection in Karaj, west of Tehran, was executed on Sunday morning after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.
The attack, which took place on January 8, left seven officers injured in the head, legs, arms, and eyes, with one remaining in a coma for three months. 
Following the brutal assault, Sadeghi fled the scene after setting his vehicle on fire. He was later found at a hideout in a drug rehabilitation center.
The Karaj Islamic Revolution Court convicted Sadeghi on charges of “taking operational action in favor of the Zionist regime, the U.S., and hostile groups,” according to the Judiciary’s Mizanonline news agency. His assets were also confiscated.
The January riots, which began as protests over economic grievances, were hijacked by foreign-backed armed rioters and terrorists, causing widespread destruction of property and killing or injuring thousands. 
Iranian authorities confirmed that American and Israeli spy agencies were directly involved, providing funding, training, and media support to the perpetrators.
According to a statement by Iran’s Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs, a total of 3,117 people lost their lives during the riots, including 2,427 innocent civilians and security personnel.
In a separate development, Iran’s Border Guard Police announced the seizure of 49 firearms—including 19 military and 30 hunting weapons—along with 153 kilograms of heroin, methamphetamine, and opium over the past week. 
Brigadier General Ali-Akbar Javidan reported that the operations targeted organized smuggling networks and resulted in the arrest of five smugglers.
Javidan warned that some networks seek to “create insecurity and carry out acts of sabotage,” but border guards remain fully vigilant. 
The seizures come amid repeated statements by U.S. and Israeli officials acknowledging efforts to provide weapons and equipment to terrorist groups inside Iran.
