Captured U.S. Drones on Display in Tehran Carry Starlink Technology
TEHRAN — Iran has highlighted the presence of Starlink satellite communication equipment on downed U.S. military drones, saying the technology was used to enhance the speed of data transmission from unmanned systems.
National television, in a report from an underground Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) air defense
base, showed captured military equipment recovered from U.S. and Israeli systems, including Starlink devices installed on MQ-9 Reaper drones.
The report said the use of Starlink represented a new development in drone warfare, noting that U.S. and Israeli drones in previous conflicts had not relied on the satellite communication system.
“In previous wars, U.S. or Israeli drones did not have Starlink technology; with Starlink, U.S. drones transmit their data much faster,” the report stated.
The footage showed Starlink equipment among components recovered from downed U.S. drones, with Iranian media reporting that the systems were intended to provide faster communications and data transfer capabilities for unmanned aircraft.
Iran has said its air defense systems countered attempts by U.S. and Israeli forces to use advanced technologies during the 40-day war launched against the country in February.
Iranian officials have previously stated that military-grade satellite jamming and GPS-spoofing systems were deployed to disrupt communications and navigation capabilities of hostile drones.
The revelation comes amid wider debate over the growing role of commercial satellite networks in military operations. Starlink, operated by U.S.-based SpaceX, has been used in several conflicts to provide high-speed satellite communications, raising questions over the expanding military applications of private space technology.
Iranian authorities say Washington is using advanced communications tools as part of broader pressure campaigns against the country, while U.S. officials have described satellite connectivity as a means of supporting communications in restricted environments.
The display of Starlink-equipped drones followed Iranian declarations that its air defenses intercepted large numbers of unmanned aircraft during the conflict, including US MQ-9 Reaper drones.
The focus on Starlink technology marks a new aspect of the drone warfare debate, as satellite-based communications become increasingly central to U.S.-Israeli terrorist operations.
