Ancient Myth, Contemporary Voices Take Stage in Tehran

TEHRAN — A new theatrical-orchestral production inspired by the Iranian epic hero Arash will headline Tehran’s autumn theatre program, alongside the release of a new album documenting music composed for the stage and a series of performances exploring inclusion, memory and contemporary Iranian theatrical practice.
Arash is scheduled to open in the second week of September at the Royal Hall of Espinas Palace. Produced by Ali Mohtasham, directed by Ali Sarabi and written by Omid Sohrabi, the production will combine theatre with live orchestral performance to revisit one of Iran’s most enduring mythological figures.
Rather than presenting Arash solely as a legendary hero, the production frames his story through contemporary themes of identity, courage, love and choice. Further details about the cast and creative team are expected to be announced ahead of the performances.
Theatre music will also take center stage this month with the unveiling of the first album in composer Saeed Zehni’s Theatre Music project. The album will be presented on August 14 during the ninth edition of the “Theatre City Fridays” program at Tehran’s City Theatre Complex.
Produced by the Zarvan cultural and artistic institute, the album brings together Zehni’s music for a selection of Iranian stage productions, including Taj Mahal, Rabia, The Seven-Colored Parniyan, Hamlet with Seasonal Salad, The Devil’s Feast, Mr Gil’s Magnificent Smile, Layla and Majnun and Hamlet, the

Little Prince of Denmark. The project offers an opportunity to hear separately music that originally existed within the theatrical experience.

Elsewhere in Tehran, The Shadow Actor has welcomed veteran performers Asghar Hemmat and Afser Asadi during rehearsals at Arasbaran Cultural Centre. Written and directed by Amir Farzam Dehnavi and produced by Sajjad Afsharian, the production works with artists with autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, creating a space for their artistic expression and greater visibility within the performing arts.

The concert-theatre Schizophrenia+, written and directed by Hamed Rahimi Nasr and produced by Mahmoud Medahi, will begin performances on August 14 at Shahrzad Theatre Camplex, with performances scheduled nightly at 9:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, religious theatre will feature in programs marking the final days of Safar. Seyyed Khorasani, written and directed by Pejman Shahverdi, will be performed near the Bab al-Reza entrance of the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, while Atash-e Del, written by Bagher Samadi and directed by Meysam Rezaei-Nejad, is scheduled at Mah Theatre in Tehran.
