Iran’s Football Federation Chief Meets With Mexican Envoy; Friendly Match Likely

TEHRAN - The president of the Iranian Football Federation met and held talks with the Mexican Ambassador Guillermo Puente Ordorica to Tehran on Sunday and discussed the bilateral sports relations.
Mehdi Taj, the head of the Federation, along with Mehdi Muhammadnabi, vice president and national team manager, Omid Jamali, director of the international department, and Mehdi Kharati, head of the national teams department, met and talked with Guillermo Puente Ordorica at the Mexican embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In the meeting, the two officials welcomed the establishment of relations between the Federation and the Mexican embassy. Referring to the cultural similarities between the two countries, Ordorica expressed hope for a friendly match between the national teams of Iran and Mexico before the 2026 World Cup. He also mentioned Mexico’s interest in holding a friendly match before the 2022 World Cup on Kish Island, and hoped to hold this match in the coming months.
Nabi, the national team manager, also said: “It could be possible to hold the match with Mexico in the form of a tournament in March (Farvidin 1405), otherwise the match could be held before the start of the 2026 World Cup in June.”
