Iranian Teen Wins Silver at Japan’s Hikari Art Competition

TEHRAN -- Marzieh Shafiee, a 15-year-old member of the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (Kanoon) in Boshruyeh, South Khorasan, has been awarded the Silver Prize at the 32nd Hikari International Children’s Art Exhibition in Japan.
Held annually, the Hikari Children’s Drawing Contest is a prestigious international platform that invites young artists to explore themes surrounding “character, emotions, feelings, thoughts, and beliefs.” The 2025 edition drew 11,479 submissions from 68 countries, making Shafiee’s achievement particularly remarkable.
Her winning piece, praised for its creative depth and emotional nuance, was selected among thousands for its compelling interpretation of the competition’s core themes.
Shafiee’s work stood out for its originality, demonstrating not only technical skill but a sophisticated grasp of psychological and emotional expression through visual art.
Organized by the Hikari Association, the competition is known for spotlighting young voices who use art as a means of personal and cultural storytelling.
This year, the Iranian contribution—comprising 46 artworks submitted by Kanoon—reflected a strong presence, underscoring the depth of artistic talent among Iran’s youth.
Shafiee’s award is accompanied by a Silver Certificate of Commendation, and places her among an elite group of young international artists whose work has resonated across borders. It is also a testament to the role of Kanoon in nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers in Iran.
