Parliament Readies Firm Retaliation to Europe’s Snapback Move
TEHRAN — The Iranian Parliament on Tuesday issued a firm warning of a strong, reciprocal response to Europe’s recent move to activate the “snapback” mechanism, which seeks to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran.
Abbas Goudarzi, spokesperson for the Parliament’s presidium, emphasized that all political factions, from reformists to principlists, stand united in calling for a resolute and deterrent reaction.
During a closed-door session held Tuesday, the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee presented a detailed report on the implications of the snapback mechanism, originally embedded in the 2015 nuclear deal framework. The session, lasting around 90 minutes, also included input from multiple lawmakers.
Goudarzi highlighted that despite the activation of the mechanism by the European troika—France, Germany, and the UK—the impact on Iran’s economy would be limited. He explained that the UN sanctions would only target around 120 individuals and entities, whereas the United States already maintains unilateral sanctions against over 2,000 Iranian persons and organizations.
“The snapback will not worsen the economic conditions beyond current challenges; rather, it aims to create psychological pressure that may inflate currency prices and market volatility,” Goudarzi noted. He urged the public to remain calm and supportive, assuring that officials will manage the situation effectively.
Parliament Speaker Muhammad Bagher Ghalibaf condemned the European move as illegal and emphasized Iran’s readiness to take decisive countermeasures.
“The unified position of the Islamic Republic will be announced and implemented shortly to impose costs on hostile actions by European countries,” Ghalibaf declared.
Ghalibaf reiterated that the European powers lack legal grounds to activate the mechanism due to their failure to fulfill nuclear deal commitments. He emphasized the support of other Security Council members like Russia and China in rejecting the snapback’s legitimacy.
“The activation of snapback does not automatically translate to war or UN Chapter VII sanctions without a new resolution, which will be vetoed by Russia and China,” Ghalibaf clarified.
He called for national unity and continued strengthening of Iran’s defense capabilities as the primary deterrents against external threats, urging accurate public communication to mitigate the psychological impact of hostile actions.
The Parliament plans to hold further sessions to review and finalize strategic responses in coordination with national security bodies.
