Art of Diplomacy Vital for Defusing Potential Wars

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

A famous Persian poetical composition of the 13th  century Iranian poet Sheikh Moslehuddin Sa’di of Shiraz’, inspired by the Holy Qur’an’s factual presentation of the creation of the human race from a single pair (Adam and Eve) whose progeny feels the pain of each other, is inscribed at the entrance of the UN headquarters in New York.
Adam’s children (mankind) are members of a whole,
“In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you’ve no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain!”
Sa’di, taking inspiration from the following words of the Almighty Creator has indeed delivered to the world Iran’s message of universal brotherhood to strive for diplomatic solutions to end national, regional, and international problems:
“O mankind! Indeed We created you from a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes that you may identify yourselves with one another. Indeed the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most Godwary among you. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-aware.” (49:13)
The three rounds of the successful indirect negotiations held so far between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US, is proof of this quest for peace and so is Tehran’s offer to New Delhi and Islamabad to mediate for prevention of any untoward conflict between the two neighbours.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi despite his busy schedule to tackle the chronic issue of misunderstanding of the past four decades on Iran’s peaceful nuclear project with the US, took time to pay attention to the potential conflict brewing between India and Pakistan, as a result of the terrorist attack that left 28 innocent persons dead.
He rightly condemned the terrorism in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and offered Iran’s mediation to defuse the crisis, resulting in accusations and counter accusations, threats and counter threats between the traditional rivals of the Subcontinent.
Araqchi, whose book “Negotiations: the Power of Diplomacy,” was unveiled yesterday at the Muscat International Book Fair before start of the Iran-US talks, presented the Arabic version of his work to his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi, and called on both India and Pakistan to observe restraint, expressing Iran’s readiness to ease tensions between the two neighbours.
He outlined negotiation strategies regarding Iran’s nuclear file and emphasised unity of the human race and an interdependence regardless of social barriers and labels, pointing out that many of the poems of Sa’di has greatly influenced India.
The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized that negotiation is not merely a diplomatic encounter, but a deeply rooted art within Iranian culture.
It is hoped that India and Pakistan – as well as the US and other crisis-ridden countries – will listen to the voice of reason and sit at the negotiation table instead of exchanging military threats.
