Parliament Speaker, FM in Beirut to Attend Nasrallah’s Funeral

TEHRAN -- Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament speaker Muhammad Bagher Ghalibaf will travel to Beirut on Sunday to take part in the funeral of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
Araghchi, Ghalibaf, and several parliamentarians will arrive at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport on Sunday morning to attend the funeral procession for Nasrallah and his chief executive Sayyed Hashim Safieddine.
More than five months after the assassination of Nasrallah by Israel, Beirut’s airport and streets are seeing a steady stream of people, many waving Hezbollah flags and carrying images of Nasrallah as they gather to honor him.
On Tuesday, a Hezbollah official said delegations from 79 countries will attend the commemoration ceremony for Nasrallah.
An Iranian official described the funeral as a “resurrection of resistance”.
“The funeral procession of the great mujahid, Martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and Martyr Sayyed Hashim Safieddine in Beirut will transform into a resurrection of resistance,” Vahid Jalalzadeh, the deputy for consular, parliamentary and Iranians affairs’ abroad at the foreign ministry wrote in a social media post.
Jalalzadeh said he was heading to Lebanon with a delegation from parliament and the foreign ministry to facilitate the visit by a high-level Iranian delegation for the ceremony, where the people will renew their allegiance to the leaders of the resistance.
An official Iranian delegation visited the Camille Chamoun Sports Stadium in Beirut to oversee the final preparations for the funeral procession, the Iranian embassy in Lebanon announced on Friday.
The event’s organizers briefed the delegation on the logistical and organizational measures taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremony, amid intense preparations for the anticipated large public turnout.
The committee overseeing the procession announced on Friday that the official funeral program will begin at 1:00 PM local time on Sunday.
“February 23 is a day that the free people of the world will never forget,” added the committee.
The committee stated that it is prepared to welcome a massive gathering and to hold a grand funeral ceremony for the two Hezbollah leaders.
Sheikh Ali Daher, head of the committee, said, “A large number of officials, including the President and the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, will attend the funeral.”
He also said that “high-ranking” Iranian officials will participate in the event, without giving further details.
Hezbollah chief Sheikh Naim Qassem will deliver a speech during the ceremony.
Nasrallah was assassinated in Israel’s bombardment of southern Beirut on September 27, 2024. Using 85 tons of explosives, Israeli jets leveled six residential buildings in Dahiyeh, following a week-long bombing campaign that hit many areas from southern Lebanon to Beirut.
Safieddine was assassinated in an Israeli attack in October 2024.
Hezbollah postponed funeral ceremonies for both leaders due to fears of Israeli attacks on the ceremony.
