Kuwait, Iraq Resume Talks to Demarcate Maritime Borders
BAGHDAD (MEMO) – The Kuwaiti-Iraqi Joint Committee will resume its sessions to discuss demarcating the maritime borders beyond Marker No.162. Al-Qabas newspaper quoted a diplomatic source saying Monday that during its meeting, the committee will continue the joint discussion on the technical and legal aspects of many files, most notably the demarcation of the maritime borders. On 6 December, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Tareq al-Bannai, confirmed his country’s commitment to the terms of the agreement regulating maritime navigation in Khor Abdullah and the Security Exchange Protocol, based on its commitment to restore bilateral relations with Iraq, which have declined. Al-Bannai also called on Iraq to correct the legal status of the maritime navigation agreement and resume meetings of its technical and other teams to complete the demarcation of the maritime borders.
