World Soil Day: Celebrating the Ground Beneath Our Feet

Salaam dear young friends, and hopefully you are all well by the grace of Almighty God in this cold weather.
Well friends, for your information the 5th of December (Thursday last week), was celebrated as World Soil day. The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), in 2002, adopted a resolution proposing the 5th of December as World Soil Day to celebrate the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human well-being.
This special day reminds us how important soil is for our planet. But why is soil so important? Let’s explore!
Soil is more than just dirt under our feet. It is a living home for countless creatures like earthworms, ants, and tiny bacteria. These little helpers make the soil healthy so plants can grow. Without healthy soil, we wouldn’t have fruits, vegetables, or grains to eat. Even the animals we depend on, like cows and sheep, eat plants that grow in soil!
Soil also helps keep our planet clean and safe. It stores water, filters it, and even traps harmful pollutants. Healthy soil can also fight climate change by capturing carbon from the air.
Unfortunately, our soil is in trouble. Pollution, cutting down too many trees, and using harmful chemicals are damaging it. Without good soil, farming becomes harder, and growing food becomes a challenge.
That’s why World Soil Day is so important. It teaches us to care for soil by planting more trees, composting kitchen waste, and avoiding plastic that harms the earth. Even small actions, like watering plants wisely and not wasting food, can make a big difference.
This year, let’s all become “Soil Heroes”! Protecting soil means protecting life. Next time you play in the garden or walk in the park, remember to thank the soil for all it gives us.
Together, we can keep our soil healthy and our planet happy!
That was all for this week. Goodbye and God bless you.
