UN Spokesman: Israeli Strikes on Syria ‘Extremely Worrying’

UNITED NATIONS (Dispatches) – The Zionist regime’s strikes that have crippled two Syrian airports are extremely worrying, said a UN spokesman on Thursday.
Reports of Israeli strikes on Aleppo and Damascus airports are extremely worrying, especially in light of the warnings and the concern of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for an escalation of the tensions between Zionists and Palestinians, said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres’ spokesman.
Guterres strongly condemns all violence in Syria and urges all parties to respect their obligations under international law, recalling that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under international humanitarian law, said the spokesman.
“We’re at a time where these heightened tensions, where any miscalculation could lead to broader violence in an already volatile region,” he told a daily press briefing.
The Zionist regime carried out aerial assaults on Syria’s two main airports in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo, putting both facilities out of service.
Citing a military source, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported on Thursday that the shelling occurred “simultaneously” and caused material damage to the airports’ landing strip.
“Israeli aggression targets Damascus and Aleppo airports,” the state television reported on its Telegram channel on Thursday.
Meanwhile, local media reported that Syrian air defenses were launched in response to the Israeli attacks.
There were also reports of damage at the Aleppo airport with no casualties.
The Zionist regime frequently attacks the positions of Syria’s military and its allies since 2011, when the Arab country found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed violence and terrorism.
The regime’s attacks mostly target the positions of Syria’s allies that have been aiding the country in its uphill battle against foreign-sponsored terror groups.
Damascus has repeatedly complained to the United Nations over the Zionist assaults, urging the world body’s Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. Its demands, however, have fallen on deaf ears.
