Minister: 1,531 Prisoners Exchanged With Countries
TEHRAN – Iranian Minister of Justice Amin Hussein Rahimi said Saturday that a total of 1,531 prisoners have been exchanged between Iran and other countries.
Since President Raisi’s administration began in August 2021, 14 bilateral documents have been signed with nine countries, and 1,531 Iranian prisoners were extradited, Rahimi told IRNA.
Rahimi said that 298 Iranian prisoners have been returned to Iran from other countries since last year, adding that 1,233 foreign nationals imprisoned in Iran were transferred to their own countries within the framework of bilateral agreements.
He also said 105 Iranian prisoners were transferred to Iran through the efforts of the ministry of justice and the ministry of foreign affairs. Among them were one prisoner suffering from an incurable disease from China, 16 prisoners from Tanzania, 15 prisoners from the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, 19 prisoners from Qatar, and one prisoner from Thailand. These prisoners were arrested and sentenced to long-term imprisonment for carrying narcotics and prohibited drugs.
Rahimi also stated that 28 Iranian prisoners in Kuwait and two Iranian convicts in India were transferred to Iran with the cooperation of the consulates of Iran in Kuwait and India.
He said 279 Afghan prisoners were handed over to their country based on an agreement on the transfer of convicts so far this year, adding that last year, 800 Afghan prisoners were transferred to their country.
