Ministry: No Direct Talks Between Iran and U.S.
TEHRAN -- Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman on Monday reacted to claims of talks between Tehran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani and U.S. Special Representative on Iran Robert Malley, saying Tehran is holding no direct bilateral talks with Washington.
However, messages for removal of anti-Iran sanctions are being exchanged with the U.S. through different channels, Nasser Kanaani told reporters.
The nuclear issue is a topic which Iran as well as the U.S. government and European members of the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA, are interested and all sides are determined in the negotiations, he added.
As declared by EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell, he is in contact with Iran and the U.S., Kanaani stated.
He touched on Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi’s visit to Iran, saying Tehran is in contact with the agency and the visit will take place whenever preparations for Grossi’s travel are made.
Kanaani also talked about the European Parliament’s draft resolution against the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.
He said although the resolution is not binding, the Europeans are aware that the Iranian parliament has prepared a draft legislation and will take legal measures against the “miscalculated” move by the EU.
