French ‘Multiculturalism’ Available to Persian Speakers
TEHRAN (IBNA) -- ‘The
Multiculturalism’ (French: Le multiculturalisme) a 1997 book by the French scholar Patrick Savidan which considers the relation of democracy with the concept of nation has been published in Persian.
The book has been translated into Persian by Mehregan Nezamizadeh. Sales Publishing in Tehran has released the book in 117 pages.
Ethnocultural diversity is not new: it is a basic fact of human history. The novelty lies in the idea of necessary consideration by the State of this diversity which characterizes the population.
In a globalized world, the need to reassess the relation between individual freedom and the culture of belonging which is becoming pressing. But how can differences be taken into account without inducing inequalities?
Because it engages contemporary conceptions and practices of citizenship, the multiculturalist model of integration corresponds well to a real paradigm shift, the meaning and scope of which must be appreciated. Through the question of multiculturalism, it is in fact the future of the democratic state which is questioned.
Patrick Savidan is a lecturer at the University of Paris IV and also president of the Observatory of Inequalities, director of the philosophy review Raison publique and director of the collection “Monde experienced” at Grasset. He co-edited, at the PUF, ‘The Dictionary of Human Sciences’ (2006).
