FALLUJAH (Dispatches) – Five rockets have targeted an Iraqi military base housing U.S. troops, a military official said.
A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five rockets struck the Ain Assad base in Anbar province, according to initial reports.
An Iraqi security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Arabic service of Russia’s Sputnik news agency that five Katyusha rockets targeted the vicinity of Ain al-Asad Air Base, located about 160 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad, late on Monday.
He added that the projectiles landed on the outskirts of the air base.
Sabereen News, a Telegram news channel associated with Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), reported that six 122mm BM-21 Grad rockets had targeted Ain al-Asad.
The report added that sounds of explosions could be heard around the city of Haditha, which is situated about 240 kilometers northwest of the capital Baghdad.
An Iraqi security source in Anbar had initially reported three rockets falling near the base, controlled by Iraq but housing U.S.-led troops.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
Rockets and armed drones frequently target the Ain Assad base. The last such incident on April 30 saw two rockets fall nearby.
The attack comes amid growing anti-U.S. sentiments in Iraq. Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that requires the government to end the presence of all foreign military forces led by the U.S. in the country.
