Iranian Researchers Produce SF6 Gas for Retina Surgery

TEHRAN -- Iranian technologists at Pardis Science and Technology Park have produced SF6 gas used for creating tamponade (pressure) on the layers of the retina during surgery.
“Our field of activity is research, production and design of ophthalmic equipment. One of these products is SF6 or sulfur hexafluoride gas which is used to create tamponade (pressure) on the layers of retina in patients who have undergone retinal surgery. This product has the same quality as the European sample with grade 5 and purity of 99.9%,” said Mehdi Hadianpour, the managing director of the company.
He explained that in vitrectomy surgery, the layers of the retina are put together and after the laser process is done, this gas is used to reduce the tamponade or the secondary compressive effect inside the eye.
“After the eye operation is finished, this gas is injected and remains inside the eye for 20 days, and then it will be removed from the eye,” Hadianpour said.
On Wednesday, Vice-President for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy Hussein Afshin inaugurated an international innovation zone.
Addressing the inauguration, Afshin said it was a big step which helps Iran to keep pace with the global technological advancement.
“If we hesitate in our movement forward, we will realize that we have suffered serious setbacks in a short period of time, and today those who think faster, move faster and create innovation faster are more successful,” he said.
Afshin underlined the role of small and medium-sized companies in the modern world where as he said the economic, technological, and innovation equations have undergone transformation.
“Successful and superior companies are not necessarily very large companies,” he said.
Iran, he said, has about 17 million graduates and over 10,000 knowledge-based companies, but warned against basking in the glory of its literate and skilled human resources.
“We cannot progress merely by relying on experts and elite human resources, as we have to try harder and move faster.”
Afshin also stressed the high capacity of Pardis Science and Technology Park, saying that it can facilitate the efforts leading to globalization.
The country needs more investment and support in order to compete with the world, he stated.
