UN Ignores Iran’s Ardent Initiative for Peace in Ukraine

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

A year of warfare is complete in Ukraine but there is no sign of victory for either of the belligerents.
The antagonists fiercely fighting each other are not the two Slavic countries of Ukraine and Russia, since the war was instigated by nations in control of the military alliance of over thirty countries called NATO to test Moscow’s martial prowess and to weaken it vis-à-vis the US and the top three West European regimes – France, Germany, and Britain.
The principal Western regimes, however, have not succeeded in their designs, in spite of the massive military aid and armaments they have provided to their man in Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who claims to be a Jew – although Judaism does not accept converts.
For its part, Russia has not raised the fighting to full scale war, which means there are no plans for occupation of all of Ukraine, and at the same time of peace returning anytime sooner to the embattled region.
Whatever the strategic goals and logistics policies of NATO and Moscow, the war has taken a heavy toll of life in Ukraine and destruction of its infrastructure, including its role as a breadbasket for many world countries.
The result has been international implications in view of the mischievous role in the conflict of the illegal Zionist entity, coupled with absurd accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, while most of the European people are bearing the brunt of the catastrophic war with runaway inflation and a cold winter due to cut in natural gas supplies by Russia.
Tehran has ardently supported diplomatic efforts to end the war and restore peace by appealing time and again to the UN, while the US and its West European allies continue to fan the flames of the yearlong conflict.
Iran’s latest move for peace in Ukraine was made on Thursday at the World Body’s headquarters in New York during the General Assembly’s eleventh emergency special session on the Ukraine conflict by ambassador Amir Sa’eed Iravani, who called for forming of a group of cross-regional countries to help end the war.
He said Tehran “supports the idea of leveraging the Secretary General’s capacity, as mandated by the UN Charter, to establish a cross-regional group of independent, competent, impartial countries, in order facilitate dialogue and help find a way out of the current impasse.
Iravani, noting that the ongoing war is “detrimental to both parties as neither can earn any long-term advantage”, said “it is crucial for all involved parties to abandon the military ambitions and prioritize finding a peaceful diplomatic resolution.”
This is ample proof that Iran has always been steadfast in its commitment to upholding the principles and purposes enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including the principles of sovereign equality and territorial integrity of all states.
The Islamic Republic, however, opposes any one-sided approach to the conflict in Ukraine. That was the reason it did not vote for the latest General Assembly resolution which has, unfortunately, been drafted by countries fanning the flames of war and calling for “immediate withdrawal” of Russian forces, without taking into account the provocative policies of NATO and the aspirations of many of the Ukrainian people who do not regard Moscow as enemy.
