Rouhani Declares Victory in Economic War With U.S.

TEHRAN (Dispatches) -- President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday Iran has successfully overcome U.S. sanctions, declaring victory in the economic war.
"The Americans were expecting Iran’s economy to come to a halt a while after the onset of the sanctions, but today we have managed to run the country with planning and reliance on an oil-free economy,” Rouhani said at a high-level economic meeting.
"This is a display of power and a major victory for the Iranian nation in the economic war,” Rouhani added.
The United States has imposed its most draconian sanctions ever as part of President Donald Trump’s "maximum pressure”, which began after pulled U.S. out of an international nuclear deal with Iran in 2018.
Faced with the obstacles that the U.S. has been creating in the way of its oil sales, Tehran has stepped up work to wean the country off oil revenues and diversify its economy.
Iran is fighting the sanctions amid the coronavirus outbreak. Rouhani described Iran’s handling of the outbreak as yet another victory for the country.
"In such a situation that even some developed countries have also faced difficulty in providing and distributing the daily needs of people, the government has overcome this situation through special strategies and preparedness of structures and organizations and with the cooperation of people and will continue to do so.”
Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Tuesday 262,173 people have been infected with the new coronavirus in Iran so far.
She said 179 virus deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours, raising the total toll to 13,211.
The official also reported 2,521 COVID-19 cases during the period, 1,820 of whom have been hospitalized. Lari said as many as 225,270 patients have recovered from the coronavirus.
