US Torpedoes Democracy in Bolivia

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

Always the enemy of independent nations, the US has for the moment succeeded in unseating the democratically elected president of Bolivia, as part of its devilish designs to dominate the whole of Latin America.
President Evo Morales, who won the re-election on October 20, took the noble step of resigning on November 10 in a peaceful manner, following street violence in La Paz and accusations by the so-called opposition of voting fraud.
He took this step as the best of bad choices after consultation with the Bolivian Workers Confederation (COB) and other supporters of his government, including troops loyal to him.
With bribe money flowing freely from the US, last Friday night some police units broke from the government and joined the protesters. On Sunday, the foreign-funded rebellion spread to the military, with the commander of Bolivia’s armed forces, Gen. Williams Kaliman, calling for Morales to step down.
The 60-year old Morales, the first indigenous Amerindian to become head of state, has been popular amongst the masses for the past 14 years, since he was first elected as president in 2005.
His nationalist policies for the betterment of the life-standards of the Bolivian people, were viewed with alarm by the US and the multinationals exploiting the economy of the landlocked South American country.
Morales, who strove to protect the rights and culture of the Andean people, maintains that he is the victim of a military coup, engineered by certain segments of the army on the payroll of Washington.
As a matter of fact, the US is conducting a nefarious campaign against the legitimate and democratically elected governments of Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, while supporting the dictatorship in Chile against the Chilean people.
Unfortunately, the Organization of American States (OAS), under pressure from the US, upheld the accusations of fraud in elections.
Morales, however, seems determined to fight back, and from an unknown location vowed never to abandon the Bolivian people, advising them to avoid violence with the so-called opposition.
He tweeted on Monday: "They (the coup leaders) should stand up to their responsibility to pacify the country, and guarantee political stability and peaceful coexistence for our people.”
He called on former election opponent Carlos Mesa and opposition leader Luis Fernando Camacho to "pacify” Bolivia.
For the moment, it is all chaos in the country of 11.6 million people, the majority of whom are indigenous, since it is not clear who is in charge of the country following Morales’ resignation.
It is also not known whether Morales will be able to exercise his democratic right as a citizen of Bolivia to contest the next elections – in the face of fierce opposition by the US and its local lackeys who want Bolivia to be a colony of Washington.
The coup d’état in Bolivia is a warning to the patriotic forces in Lebanon as well as in Iraq, to knit ranks against the paid servants of the US who have resorted to violence and vandalism in the streets in a bid to destabilize the countries.
