Interior Minister:

Terrorist Cult Members to Be Dealt Firmly

TEHRAN (Dispatches) – Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli here on Wednesday decried deadly attacks by followers of a cult leader on security forces in northern Tehran, saying those behind the violence will be dealt with firmly.
Speaking to reporters, Rahmani Fazli offered his condolences to the bereaved families of five security forces who were martyred in the attacks.
"All those disrupting the security would be treated decisively,” he said, adding there will be no negotiations with the rioters. The minister further said he expected the judiciary to bring to justice all those who broke the law.
Speaking at the cabinet meeting Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also pointed to the incident and said no violent or insulting move against police forces will be tolerated.
On Tuesday, Police spokesman Brigadier General Saeed Montazer-al-Mahdi said law enforcement forces had arrested more than 300 members of the Gonabadi dervishes, including the drivers of a bus and a car that plowed through a group of police forces, leading to the martyrdom of five people.
In the attacks by the dervishes, three policemen and two members of the volunteer Basij force were martyred. As many as 30 policemen were also injured while public and private property was destroyed by the attackers.
The rioters had gathered in front of a police station in northern Tehran, demanding the release of some cult members who were held on drugs trafficking charges.
Rahmani Fazli said the dervishes are "reasonable people” and "we shouldn’t hold their community responsible for the crimes of a limited few”.
At the same time, he said authorities will not deal lightly with those "who instill terror” and "break the law”.
