Iranian FM: U.S. Rulers Cannot Be Trusted

TEHRAN -- Iran’s foreign minister says U.S. politicians have proven time and again that they cannot be trusted, stressing that the United States’ practical measures constitute the main criterion used by Iran to judge the statements of the American officials.
Hussein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a tweet on Thursday as the remaining signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal prepared to take another recess on Saturday and return to their capitals for consultations.
“History, experience, and U.S. behavior have shown that American politicians and rulers cannot be trusted,” Amir-Abdollahian wrote.
“For us, the criterion for any judgment will be practical behavior of the United States. On the issue of sanctions removal, Iran’s interests must be fully realized and tangible action must be taken on the ground,” he added.
The Iranian top diplomat’s remarks followed media reports denoting that the American officials were seeking direct negotiations with the Iranian delegation over the fate of the 2015 landmark deal, which the U.S. unilaterally left in 2018.
In a phone call with UN chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday, Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Iran’s deep distrust of U.S. rulers, saying Washington and its European allies to take practical and tangible measures in order to reach a sustainable and reliable agreement.
