Jordan MPs Walk Out of Session on Zionist Deal
AMMAN (Dispatches) – Jordanian MPs have walked out of parliament in protest against the signing of a water and energy deal with the Zionist regime.
Jordanian MP Saleh al-Armouti called for those who signed the declaration of intent with the Zionist regime to leave the session, saying, “If they don’t leave, I will.”
Parliament had agreed to set a session to discuss the agreement of intent, however, after the walk-out, the speaker was forced to adjourn the session because it had lost quorum.
The demonstrators carried banners that read “Down with the agreements of shame with the Zionist entity” and “The water-for-energy deal is a new crime against the homeland and the citizens.”
Last month, Jordan announced the signing of a declaration of intent for exchanging water for energy with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Zionist regime.
The deal has led to protests, with a sit-in held outside the government building on Wednesday during the session to discuss its terms.
Jordan signed a so-called peace deal with the occupying regime in 1994, but Jordanians are at odds with their government and oppose any form of normalization of ties with the occupying regime.
The vast majority of Arabs oppose normalization and support the Palestinian cause.
