BAGHDAD (MEMO) – Iraq’s Fatah Alliance, the country’s most prominent Shia coalition, has announced that it had filed a lawsuit with the Federal Court to annul the parliamentary elections results.
Leader of the alliance, Hadi al-Amiri, said “sufficient evidence” had been submitted to the Federal Court on Thursday “to annul the results of the parliamentary elections”.
The Fatah Alliance includes the political wing of Asaib Ahl al-Haq. The Shia popular resistance forces all played a major role in defeating Daesh when it took over a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017.
In 2018, the alliance came second in the country’s parliamentary elections with 48 seats, however, in the last elections, it attained only 16 seats.
On Sunday, the Independent High Electoral Commission said the final results of the elections will be announced within two days.
According to the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections last month, the Sadrist bloc won 73 seats out of 329.
For weeks, the political forces who reject the election results have led mass protests in Baghdad, calling for all results to be manually recounted.
