Iran Condemns Attack on Consulate in Hamburg

TEHRAN -- Iran has
condemned an attack by unknown people on the building of its consulate general in the German city of Hamburg, urging Berlin to act “seriously” and “responsibly” to secure Iranian diplomatic missions.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the German government needs to fulfill its responsibilities with regard to protecting diplomatic missions in the European state in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
“The German government is expected to adopt consistent and effective strategies to prevent a recurrence of such attacks while carefully examining the details and dealing seriously with its perpetrators,” Khatibzadeh added.
The attack that took place in Winterhude district resulted in some damage to the building, but no one was reported hurt.
According to the German newspaper Bild, the driver of a passing car saw smoke rising from the entrance of the Iranian consulate on Friday and also two men who were speeding away from the area.
Local media reported that the fire was caused by a Molotov cocktail thrown by the assailant or assailants.
The police immediately launched a major manhunt and subways were stopped and searched.
