– Syrian air defenses have shot down missiles fired by the Zionist regime in the skies over the capital, Damascus, SANA state news agency said early on Friday.
“At around 1:26 am today, the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction southeast of Beirut, targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus,” a Syrian military source was quoted as saying in a statement carried by SANA.
Syrian TV showed scenes of air defenses shooting at targets over the city.
“Our air defense confronted the aggressor’s missiles and shot down most of them, and the losses were limited to materiel,” the statement said.
The sound of the planes flying at a low altitude over the areas on the outskirts of Beirut was heard at dawn on Friday, witnesses said.
The UK-based so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors developments in Syria, confirmed the attack.
The occupying regime’s military, however, declined to comment on the reported attack on Syria.
Last month, Syria said Zionist air raids targeted the Damascus and Homs regions, adding that the country’s air defenses intercepted several Zionist missiles.
SANA, quoting an unnamed military source at the time, reported that the occupying regime launched an air raid from the direction of southeastern Beirut against some posts in Syria.
Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates later renewed its call on the United Nations and the Security Council to assume responsibilities based on the UN Charter and act firmly to prevent the recurrence of the regime’s attacks on Syrian territories.
In identical letters addressed to the UN Secretary General António Guterres and then president of the Security Council T. S. Tirumurti, the ministry said the “Israeli occupation authorities launched an air missile aggression from the southeast side of Beirut, targeting some posts in the surroundings of Damascus and Homs”, Syria’s official news agency reported.
It added that the Zionist regime carried out the act of aggression with the purpose of prolonging the war on Syria and raising the morale of terrorists in the northeastern and southern parts of the country.
