TEHRAN – Khuzestan’s Foolad football team claimed Iran’s Hazfi Cup for the first time ever after defeating Esteghlal in a penalty shootout Sunday night.
In the final match of the knock-out competitions at Isfahan’s Naghsh-e Jahan Stadium, the Khuzestan-based team gained a 4-2 victory in shoot out after the two teams could not open the scoring in 120 minutes.
The title gave Foolad a direct quota to the next season of the AFC Champions League.
Esteghlal are the most decorated team in the competition, winning the title seven times, followed by Persepolis with six titles.
The competition was founded in 1975.
