Iran’s Basketball to Meet Czech in 2020 Tokyo Opener
TEHRAN – Iran national basketball team will play the Czech Republic in the opening match of the 2020 Olympic Games on July 25.
The Czech Republic became the last team to seal a berth in the Tokyo men’s basketball tournament after blowing away Greece 97-72 in the final of their qualifying event on Sunday.
Iran will compete in men’s basketball at the Olympics for the third time in its history after earning its spot as the highest-ranked Asian team at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Mehran Shahintab’s team has been drawn in Group A along with USA, France and the Czech Republic.
The Iranians last reached the Olympic Games in 2008, and also had competed in 1948.
The top two teams in each of the three groups and the two-best third-place finishers will move on to the quarterfinals.
