Ex-Iran, Persepolis Player Minavand Dies of COVID-19
TEHRAN (Dipstaches) – Ex-midfielder of Iran national football team and Persepolis Mehrdad Minavand has died due to COVID-19.
He was 45. The former player of Austrian team Sturm Graz was hospitalized in intensive care unit (ICU) of the Laleh Hospital in Tehran last week.
Minavand was part of Iran national football team in the 1996 AFC Asian Cup and 1998 FIFA World Cup.
He also played for Iranian club Persepolis in two stints.
AFC, FIFA President Gianni Infantino Extend Condolences
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA President Gianni Infantino condoled the death of Mehrdad Minavand.
"Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mehrdad Minavand who passed away in Tehran after a battle with COVID-19”, AFC wrote on its Instagram account.
And also, FIFA President Gianni Infantino extended his deepest sympathies to the Iran Football Federation over the death of Ex-Team Melli and Persepolis midfielder Mehrdad Minavand.
"I would like to express my sincere condolences over the passing of the former Iranian national football player Mehrdad Minavand,” Infantino said.
He added that "words seem inadequate to describe this sorrow. Minavand’s legacy and achievement, especially his personality, popularity, and humanity, will never be forgotten.”
"On behalf of the international football community, I deeply sympathize with the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, his family, and friends and loved ones of Mehrdad” he added.
