Car Bomb Kills 5 in Syrian Border Town
DAMASCUS (Dispatches) – A car bomb exploded in a vegetable market in the northeastern Syrian town of Ras al-Ain close to the border with Turkey, which left several killed and wounded, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported on Saturday.
Two children were among those killed and their mother was wounded in the explosion, SANA reported, adding the blast also killed several Turkish-backed militants.
A video posted by Kurdish news website Rudaw showed a burning car and shocked crowds helping casualties.
Turkey, which is allied with some militant groups opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, occupied the town in 2019 in an offensive to push back Kurdish YPG forces, which Ankara views as a terrorist group.
The explosion is the latest in a string of bombings targeting areas occupied by the Turkish forces and Turkey-backed militants in northern and northeastern Syria.
No party claimed responsibility for the bombing.
On 10 December, a car bomb killed 16 people including two civilians and three Turkish personnel at a checkpoint in the town.
In July, the blast from an explosives-rigged motorbike ripped through a vegetable market there, killing at least eight people, including six civilians.
