Autumn Rains Lift Iran’s Water Reserves; Flooding Affects 14 Provinces
TEHRAN -- Widespread autumn rains brought relief and renewed water reserves across Iran on Sunday, with officials reporting significant inflows into dams and the reopening of most blocked roads, even as emergency teams responded to flooding in more than a dozen provinces.
The rainfall, which began late last week and continued through Sunday, has raised the country’s dam fill rate to 45 percent, with inflows estimated at about 700 million cubic meters, according to the National Disaster Management Organization.
The Dez dam recorded an inflow of 6,200 cubic meters per second, a substantial boost to reserves after months of drought concerns.
The Meteorological Organization said the precipitation system was active in more than 25 provinces on Sunday, with the heaviest rainfall in the southwest, the southern slopes of the central Alborz range and the southern Zagros.
Red alerts were issued for Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces, with orange alerts for 14 others including Tehran, Alborz and Isfahan.
The Red Crescent reported that 14 provinces were affected by flooding and waterlogging over the previous 72 hours. Emergency teams provided services to 794 people, gave shelter to 43 and pumped water from 79 residential homes.
In Lorestan alone, 46 relief workers in 10 teams assisted 153 people and drained 35 flooded buildings. One death was reported in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.
Disaster management spokesman Omid Mohtaram said 18,000 operational teams were
deployed and 8,000 backup teams were on standby. He said 12 main roads and 210 rural roads that had been blocked were reopened, power was restored to 140 of 180 villages that lost electricity, and 130 flooded residential units had been drained.
The rainfall also brought disruption. Schools in 15 counties of Bushehr province were closed for the afternoon shift, and motorcycle traffic was banned in Tehran due to slippery conditions. A landslide on the Dorud-Andimeshk railway line prompted the transfer of 3,400 passengers by bus, with no injuries reported.
Forecasters said the system would continue into Monday in northern and western regions, with a noticeable drop in temperatures expected across the northern half of the country through Tuesday.
